Here’s a super easy guide on how to make a half apron! Perfect for cooking and house work. Make multiple to have a clean one ready when needed and in different colours to match your clothes!
I love wearing aprons. In fact I feel lost when doing any house work or cooking without one on. Not only do they protect your clothes, but I love utilising the pockets when cleaning as anything out of place gets popped in one pocket and rubbish in another which means so much less walking back and forwards.
Half aprons are great as they still offer a place to dry hands and protect clothing without being a full apron which can be a little bit less confortable in my opinion.
What you will need
- Pre washed fabric, approx 1m
- matching thread
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Iron
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
- Fabric scissors
How to make a half apron
If what your sewing will be something you want to wash, like an apron, be sure to prewash your fabric.
Next cut out two rectangles. One will be 90 x 50cm, (35.5 x 19.5 inch approx) this will be the main apron part. And then cut out the pocket piece 50 x 30cm (19.5 x 12 inch approx).
Then cut out the two ties. These are 15 x 65cm (6 x 25.5 inch approx).
Next iron everything! Fold the ties in half right sides together and roll over all the raw edges on the pocket and the apron twice. Then pin the edges to keep them in place.
Time to sew!
Start by sewing the ties. Sew along one short edge and down the open raw edges on both ties. Then turn the ties in the right way and iron flat.
Top stitch close to the edge all the way around the ties to seal them flat.
Next, insert the raw edge of the ties into the rolled edge of the apron. The rolled edge should cover the raw edges of the ties and the ties should run parallel to the top of the apron on the wrong side.
Then sew along the rolled edge just where it is covering the raw edge of the ties to lock it in place.
Once it’s sewn in place, fold it back the other way so that the tie goes out from the apron and sew again to hold it in the out position.
Now sew all the way around the edge of the apron, sewing down the rolled hem.
Next, sew the rolled edge down on one of the long edges of the pocket piece.
Find the middle of the pocket and the middle of the apron by folding them in half and placing a pin.
Then place the pocket onto the middle of the apron, lining up the middles.
Sew around three sides of the pocket leaving the top open.
Next sew through the middle of the pocket to turn it into two smaller pockets. I find this useful when tidying up as I can put rubbish in the left pocket and things to re home in the right.
And you’re done!
I hope you make your own half apron and let me know when you do!
